(Hidalgo, Texas)-Playing at Hidalgo ISD Bill Pate Stadium, it almost seemed as if though it was a track meet with Mission High School head football coach, Danny Longoria as the Mission Eagles defeated PSJA North High School 27-21 on Thursday night to end its regular season at 7-3 and a second place finish in District 31-6A with a 6-2 record. The Eagles will enter the Class 6A Division I Bi-District Championships as the top seed from 31-6A Division I team and will now play host to 32-6A Los Fresnos on Friday at 7:00 p.m. at Bill Pate Stadium in Hidalgo. “We came out to play football last night,” says Longoria. “I don’t know how many yards I ran for last night, but it was quite a few,” laughs Longoria.
The playoff picture is simple. The San Benito Greyhounds will travel to play Edinburg Vela on Thursday at Richard R. Flores Stadium wins, and Harlingen South, will play host to PSJA North next Friday. “Both coaches were stunned when I told them both that Bill Pate Stadium in Hidalgo was our home field,” laughed Longoria. “This is our home field and this is where we will play in the first round.”
On Thursday night, the Eagles were flying high as senior quarterback Kevin Guerra rushed for three touchdowns and threw for another as they built a 27-7 lead going imto the fourth quarter. The Raiders scored 14 points in the fourth quarter but head coach Marcus Kaufmann says that,”we need to refocus as we travel to play 32-6A Harlingen South next Friday in the playoffs. We still have some unfinished business.”
The Raiders (8-2) will enter the playoffs as the UIL State 6A Division II second seed and will play the 32-6A DII top seed, Harlingen South (9-0). The winner will play the winner from District 30-6A or 29-6A.
