(Donna, Texas)-It was a great victory for Donna North High School (2-7, 1-6) as they slipped past Brownsville Rivera (2-8, 0-7) 35-28 at Sams Stadium on Thursday night in their District 32-6A finale. The district win was a first for Chiefs head coach Juan Cuevas since October 13, 2017. “This was an amazing effort from our team and coaches,” says the second-year head football coach, Cuevas.

The Chiefs will likely, drop to Class 5A Division I with the upcoming UIL Realignments in February. “I looks like it will happen,” says Cuevas. The Chiefs matched the 2016 season with most wins in a season. “We are changing the mindset here at Donna North. The school spirit is awesome. Attitudes are great. I love these players and great things are coming,” added Cuevas.

Against Brownsville Rivera, Donna North RB Louie Cavazos rushed 29 times for 300 yards and three touchdowns and DB D’Andre Quezada had two interceptions and caught three passes for 102 yards and one score. Quarterback Robert Gomez passed for 128 yards and one score. “All three players had a great night,” added Cuevas.

Cuevas talked about the hard-fought 6A schedule. “We played against Harlingen, Harlingen South, San Benito, Los Fresnos, La Feria, Weslaco, all playoff bound teams. Even if we drop to 5A, teams are just as tough. Regardless, we need to put another team together and work hard in the offseason. We will see what district we will play in,” says Cuevas.
