(Edinburg, Texas)-The Edinburg Vela Sabercats will be vying for its fourth Class 6A Division II Regional Championship appearance in 2021 under fifth-year head football coach John Campbell.
In 2020, the Sabercats fell short of making it to the regional finals after losing to San Antonio Brennan 28-3, something that head coach Campbell is not used to exiting early on. Vela knocked off Weslaco 38-33 in the 6A DII Bi-District Championships.
Like most teams, this year will interesting in District 31-6A. Teams like PSJA North, Edinburg North, and Vela could all be competing for a District 31-6A title.
Returning will be senior RB Pablo “PJ” Rivera, who rushed for 221 yards in the COVID-19 shorten season as compared to the 1,057 yards he gained as a sophomore. He will be joined by RB Ted Galvan (395 yards). Another player to watch on offense will be senior WR Justin Vega (30-425 yards 5 TDs) and sophomore tightend, 6’2 Jason Shupe. Under center will be senior QB Chase Campbell, a 6’3 195lbs athletic player with plenty of speed and can throw deep to Vega. This will be his first varsity start after playing the back-up role for the past two seasons for the Sabercats. Campbell will be protected by senior OL 6’3 285lbs Mark Gomez, and OL 6’2 295lbs Marco Gomez. On special teams, Job Juarez kicks deep and leads the RGV with FGs made and extra points. The Sabercats returns 43 lettermen with eight starters on offense and seven on defense.
