(Pharr, Texas)-At PSJA Stadium, the Rio Grande Valley Coaches Association’s annual East vs West Football Showcase proved to be a nail biter to the end as the East All-Stars stopped the West All-Stars 27-26.
San Benito HS senior, Fabian Garcia scored two touchdowns to give the East a well deserved victory. “Believe it or not, I’m coaching this team to win today,” said La Villa HS head coach, Daniel Perez. “I really want our team to win.”
At one point, the East team trailed the West 20-14 but, two scores by Garcia, including the game winning score rallied the East team to victory. First, the rally was ignited by a 79-yard touchdown run by Weslaco RB Elias Rodriguez Jr that made the score 26-21, East trailing. “I had two of the best running backs on this East team, so we put them both to work,” said Perez.
The West team was led by UTRGV commit, quarterback Ale Aparicio (PSJA North) who scored twice, including a 50-yard touchdown run which gave the West their biggest lead of the night at 26-14.
The West went up 20-14 before the half as Sharyland High quarterback Bo Krell spotted McAllen HS Wr Max Alvarez for a 63-yard score. The Bulldog senior also caught a previous score from Aparicio earlier on a 30-yard pass. “I’m excited for all these seniors. This will probably be the last game in pads for these young men. I’m proud of these players. I only wish them the best,” said West All-Star head coach from PSJA North, Marcus Kaufmann.
Players participating in this annual event, also made their announcements of playing at the next level. PSJA North HS linemen twin brothers, Dante and Danny Garcia will play for the NCAA Division I UTRGV Vaqueros football team in 2025. “Me and my brother (Danny) will have accepted our offer from the Vaqueros,” said Dante. “Can’t wait to wear that uniform.” (HSSMImages /DeLeon)
