(Edcouch, Tx)- Fans will see a new offense in 2023. Edcouch-Elsa High School Yellowjackets head football coach, Victor Cardenas says, “we are going to open it up. Fans will see a combination of running and passing.” Only in his second season, Cardenas led the Yellowjackets to the UIL State 5A DII playoffs with a 4-7 overall record after finishing in fourth place in 2022.

The Yellowjackets will be playing its final season in District 15-5A DII with Mercedes, Brownsville Porter, Valley View, Flour Bluff, and Gregory-Portland since the UIL will make the new realignments in 2024. Maybe.

The Jackets will be looking to improve on defense as they gave an average of 31.0 points per game last year while averaging 18.0 points scored on offense.

The Jackets will begin this season looking for a quarterback, running backs, and wide receivers.  All purpose player, Moses De Leon returns with 349 yards rushing and 324 yards receiving. With six players back on defense, Matthew Cano (6’1 185lbs 54 tackles), Elijah Trevino (27 solos tackles), LB Troy Barco (89 tackles 62 assist), DT Matthew Enriquez (40 tackles), and Gavin Rodriguez (81 tackles 19 solos), the Jackets defense will bring plenty of experience.

The Yellowjackets will test its new passing offense as they open their season against Corpus Christi Carroll on Saturday, August 26th at Buccaneer Stadium followed by four more non-conference games before hosting defending champs,  Flour Bluff at home on October 6th in their district opener.
