(Mercedes, Texas)-“We are starting to get better each week and we have to remain focused in District 16-5A DII. It’s a tough district,” says Mercedes head football coach, Roger Adame. “I’m excited with our team.”

The Mercedes Tigers (4-0, 2-0) ranked No.2 by High School Sports Magazine’s Top 25 polls are on track to win the outright district title in 2021. The Tigers will play Roma (2-2, 1-1) this Friday followed by Edcouch-Elsa, Sharyland, PSJA Southwest, Mission Veterans, and will end their regular season at Sharyland Pioneer, the defending champions. “It’s still a long season and we must keep playing football each week,” adds Adame.

The Gladiators will travel to play the Tigers this Friday night and they will have to try to overcome their 48-3 loss to Mission Veterans last week. The Gladiators will have their hands full on Friday night.

The Mercedes Tigers torched Valley View (0-4, 0-2) last week with QB Michael Cisneros passing for 387 yards and five touchdowns. He was almost perfect, completing 22-of-24 passes. The Tigers offense also rushed for 184 yards and scored three rushing TDs on 27 carries in their 69-0 win. Players to watch are RB Miguel Jimenez (312 yards rushing), WR Terrell Trevino (245 yards), WR Joseph Rocha (296 yards), and Xavier Sanchez (209 yards)

On defense, the Tigers are led by LB Roan Galvan (3 QB sacks) and 31 tackles. They have stopped opposing teams from scoring on Friday nights. In four games, the Mercedes defense has held opponents to 35 total points. The Tigers advanced to the 2020 UIL State 5A Division II Area Championships before losing to Leander Rouse 57-28. “It’s still a long road to the state playoffs, but from this point on, every game makes a difference come playoff time,” adds Adame.

In the playoffs, District 16-5A DII will face off against 15-5A DII opponents Boerne Champion (4-0), Alamo Heights (4-0), Floresville (4-0), and more than likely, Lockhart (1-3). The Tigers defeated Floresville in the first round last year 41-34. “Those are tough teams that this district will have to face,” added Adame.
