(Brownsville, Texas)-“It’s great to be in Texas,” says first-year head football coach Kelley Lee. Those were his words before the season kicked off as he captured win No.1 in District 16-5A Division I over Brownsville Porter, 45-14 on Thursday night. Lee took over head coaching duties just a few months ago, resigning as head coach from Eastern New Mexico University of the NCAA DII Lonestar Conference. Yes, college football. “I had this opportunity to come to the Rio Grande Valley and I’m glad I made the right decision,” added Kelley. “And I love the food here too.”
On Thursday night, Lee watched his Chargers (1-1, 1-0) stop Brownsville Porter (1-1, 0-1) on their first possession by intercepting a pass by DB Gilbert Trilo. A 20-yard touchdown run by Storm Montoya put the Chargers up 7-0 over the Cowboys. Porter responded. WR Gunnar Williams scored on a 85-yard pass from quarterback Kyle Aguirre to tie the game at 7-7.
Brownsville Veterans held on to the ball in the second quarter, scoring on two drives to make it 17-7 but, the Cowboys answered right back with a 65-yard scoring drive to trail the Chargers 17-14 at the half. In the second half, the Chargers came out fueled and recharged, scoring 28-unanswered points to end the game.
The Chargers will play host to the Weslaco East Wildcats (1-0, 1-0) on Friday at Brownsville Veterans Memorial HS Stadium at 7:00 p.m. in a key match-up. Porter will play Brownsville Pace (1-1, 1-0) at Sams Stadium on Friday with kickoff also at 7:00 p.m.
