(McAllen, Texas)-The 31-5A McAllen Bulldogs (13-3, 24-9) punched its way into the State 5A Boys Basketball playoffs in a decisive win over McAllen Nikki Rowe (21-12, 9-6) on Friday night, winning 52-43. “It was a tough game we played tonight, but these rivalry games are always tough,” said Bulldog head coach, Ryan Flores. “It was close.”
The Bulldogs came out firing with three straight three-pointers to take a nine point lead, but Warriors Interim head coach Flores called a timeout to calm his Warriors down and the Warriors would end the half leading McHi 22-16.
Longtime Warriors head basketball coach, Jose Yebra was nowhere to be seen on Friday night. Instead, head football coach Robert Flores was the interim head basketball coach on courtside, leading his team against his little brother, Ryan. As for Yebra, McAllen ISD offered no comments of his where abouts on Friday night. According to HSSM sources, Yebra was placed on suspension pending an UIL investigation regarding the basketball program.
With the win, the Bulldogs will head into the State 5A playoffs and the Bulldogs are currently sitting in third place, one game behind second place McAllen Memorial (26-6, 14-2).
