(Roma, Texas)-In non-conference action, the 32-6A Harlingen Cardinals (4-1) fell to 30-6A Laredo United Longhorns (3-2) 36-35 at Gladiator Stadium in Roma Field on Friday night. Both teams will take the week before they kickoff district play. The defending 32-6A champions, Cardinals will travel to play the Weslaco Panthers (5-0) on October 6th in their District opener.
The Longhorns played to the end behind UTRGV commit, quarterback Atzel Chavez (1,540 passing 15 TDs) despite being held to 199 yards passing with one score, completing only 22-of-45 passes. But, the last four minutes proved to be epic. Longhorns RB Santiago Salce gave head coach David Sanchez the win he was looking for as he score from 1-yard with :56 seconds left to play. Prior to that score, Harlingen sophomore running back Noah Huerta put the Cardinals up 35-30 lead with 3:40 remaining. Huerta had 20 carries for 101 yards and three touchdowns. “REFINE,” we’re the best words that Harlingen head football coach Manny Gomez told HSSM.
