(Weslaco, Texas)-The 32-6A Weslaco Panthers (5-0) picked up a big win over 30-6A Laredo United South (1-4) on Friday night, winning 28-17 at Bobby Lackey Stadium. With the win, the Panthers will take the week off as they will prepare to host the defending District 32-6A champions, Harlingen Cardinals (4-1) on October 6th at 7:00 p.m. “We knew this game tonight was going to be one of our biggest challenges but our kids prevailed and got the job done tonight,” said Weslaco HS Head football coach, Roy Stroman.

On fourth down, Stroman made the call to go for it and it paid off big too! RB Elias Rodriguez took the handoff and found the sidelines and sprinted, untouched, for a 52-yard touchdown run to put the Panthers up 7-0 in the first quarter. Rodriguez would answer right back with another 65-yard touchdown, this time, it was up the middle, watching himself on the Panther mammouth scoreboard to put the Panthers up 14-7 with 1:11 left in the first quarter. With :30 seconds left in the half, Laredo United South snapped a high pitch over the punter and the Panthers recovered the pigskin. One play later, WR Ayden Moralez broke several tackles, maintained his balance, to put the Panthers up 21-7 at the half. In the second half, Rodriguez scored his third touchdown of the night to put the Panthers in control leading 28-7, ending the United South Panthers hopes of a possible comeback. (HSSMIMages/DeLeon)
