(McAllen,Texas)-The 15-5A DI McAllen Memorial High School Mustangs missed the University Interscholastic League football playoffs in 2022 under Moses Patterson in only his second season. 

    This year, the expectations are higher after finishing 3-7 overall and Patterson is excited about the upcoming season. “It’s a tough district but we will be ready,” says Patterson. 

   The Mustangs returns 31 players back on the roster with five on offense and seven on defense.   

   Players to watch will be first-year prospects at quarterback Blake Egan (5’9 165lbs) and Kane Coy (5’8 160lbs). Look for both QBs to be under center sharing handoffs to RB Sebastian Aleman, RB JP Garza, and Dylan Goodson. On defense, Patterson is excited with returning players that includes LB Daniel De La Cruz, who has a career high of 159 tackles with 102 solo tackles. Others include are LB Adrian Garza, DB Chris Luna, DB Steven Egan, DE Erick Guarajdo, LB Nico Lara, and LB Dalton Keller.

  The Mustangs will open its season against Brownsville Hanna on Thursday night at McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium August 24th with a 7:00 p.m. kickoff. They will also face Mission Veterans (9/1) and Edinburg Vela (9/8) in non-conference. (HSSMImages/Ruiz)
