On Saturday morning, the Gregory Portland Wildcats (4-2, 1-0) defeated Brownsville Porter 72-0 in District 15-5A Division II Conference play. With the win, the Wildcats stays in first place along with Mercedes and Flour Bluff at 1-0. The Cowboys drops to 0-1, 4-2 overall.
The Wildcats, playing in the Rio Grande Valley for the first time after the UIL realigned some Coastal Bend teams last February to be paired with Flour Bluff and four other Valley teams for the next two years, will now travel back to the RGV, this time to meet the Edcouch-Elsa Yellowjackets (2-4, 0-1) next Friday night in conference play.

Wildcats QB Reed Dooms put GP on the score board early with a seven-yard pass to WR 6’3 junior Colton Harrison to make it 7-0. On the Porter Cowboys first possession, a blocked punt by GP Gabe Juarez was recovered and returned to make it 14-0. In the second quarter, the Wildcats led 27-0 and Dooms again found Harrison for 99-yard touchdown pass to end the Cowboys chances of a win. ”I’m extremely pleased with the way played. We came out fast in the first half,” said GP head football coach Brent Davis. Wildcats RB Austin Moreno rambled up the middle for a 42-yard score to end the half leading 48-0 over the Cowboys. Dooms finished the day with 233 yards passing and three TD passes.
