(Pharr, Texas)-At PSJA Stadium, more than 10,000 fans watched the PSJA North (5-0, 2-0) Raiders put an end to the Edinburg Vela Sabercats (4-1, 1-1) reign, winning 28-21 in a key District 15-5A Division I match-up on Thursday night in the Blue Diamond Realty Group Game of the Week. “Wow, can you believe this? This was a great football game and I’m going to enjoy this win,” said Raiders head football coach, Marcus Kaufmann. The win did not come easy.
With less than 2:30 left to play, the Raiders led 28-14 but senior quarterback, Bobby Garcia led his Sabercats on a drive, finding Dimas De Leon open for a score to trail 21-28. On the ensuing kickoff, the Sabercats opted for an onside kick with Sabercats AJ Moreno recovering the ball, giving the Sabercats an another opportunity to tie the game with 1:22 left. The Raiders ended the Sabercats reign by sacking sophomore quarterback Myles Lopez on fourth down. The Psja North defense showed their dominance by holding the Sabercats to 68-total rushing yards on 23 carries and held their quarterbacks to 142 passing yards. Kaufmann repeatedly kept clinching his fists on the sidelines and lifted his arms high, showing victory as time expired. The win over the Sabercats is a first for Kaufmann as the Raiders head football coach.
