(Edinburg, Texas)-Teams like Los Fresnos High School and Edinburg High School are wearing Soft-shell helmets to avoid head injuries during practices and scrimmages. “It’s a long season,” says David Cantu, athletic director of Los Fresnos CISD. “If we can prevent concussions and other head-type of injuries, then, being prevented is an early measure for our players.”

The puffy-type foamed helmets are strapped over the regular football helmets during practices or scrimmages with some players opting to wear them. Edinburg HS head football coach, Rene Guzman agrees that these type of protective wear will keep players from sustaining injuries that could sideline players even before the season starts. “We want to protect and prevent players from being injured. Today, colleges and NFL teams are beginning to wear these strapped-on helmets,” says Guzman.

On Friday night, more 50% of players on the field at Bobcat Stadium were seen wearing these strapped-on foam-like helmets over their regular football helmets. (HSSMImages)
