(Edcouch, Texas)-Just when many fans thought that the Edcouch-Elsa Yellowjackets were done after starting the season at 1-5, the Jackets won for the second straight week by defeating the PSJA Memorial Wolverines 63-0 at Bennie Layton Sr. Memorial Stadium on Friday to improve to 3-5, 3-3 in District 16-5A Division II. What’s even better, the Yellowjackets will make the State 5A Division II playoffs by defeating Valley View (0-7, 0-5) and Roma (4-4, 3-3), but all the weight will be on the Sharyland Pioneer Diamondbacks.
Yellowjackets running back, Josh Gomez did it again, by rushing for 316 yards on 16 carries. Last week, Gomez had 32 carries for 306 yards. “He’s had three games with 300-plus gains,” says Jackets head football coach, Christian Navarro. “We just need to focus and finish the season. We are getting healthier and our goals remains the same. We want to make the playoffs.” The Jackets rushed for 669 yards on 40 carries and passed for another 59 yards. Gomez has 1,217 yards rushing this season on 112 carries.
With the win, the Jackets holds the edge with playoff seedings after defeating Sharyland Pioneer last week 42-21. The D’Backs lost again to Sharyland 35-14 on Saturday and they have three remaining games against PSJA Southwest, Mission Veterans, and Mercedes. (HSSMIMages/JoseFLORES)
