For the second week in a row, the Mission Eagles (1-1) played host at Bill Pate Stadium in Hidalgo due to stadium issues at Tom Landry Hall of Fame Stadium in Mission. This week’s opponent, the Weslaco Panthers (1-0) and what a game it turned out to be on Thursday night. The Panthers led 10-7at the half and recored another touchdown in the third quarter to take a 17-7 lead. “We know that Mission is a great ball club. We have to be ready tonight. We are a young team,” said Weslaco Head Coach, Roy Stroman.
In the fourth quarter, the Eagles started to fly. “We need to score more points tonight,” Daniel Longoria, Mission head football coach. “We need to get things started on offense. The Panthers will test us tonight.” Instead, the young Panther team found themselves down 17-20 with less than one minute to play. A late touchdown by the Panthers ended the Eagles chances. “Tonight, we are dedicating this game to the late Bobby Lackey. He was a legend in Weslaco to this game of football,” said Stroman. Lackey died on Thursday morning.
