(Brownsville, Texas)-At the start of the season, Edcouch-Elsa HS head football Victor Cardenas said that he was “going to open it up” and on Thursday night, the Yellowjackets did just that, by defeating Brownsville Rivera 56-20 at Sams Memorial Stadium.
Jayreed Amaya sparked the Yellowjackets with a beautiful 92-yard kickoff return to put the Jackets up 7-0, igniting the visitor side of Jacket fans. Under center, YellowJackets quarterback Elijah Trevino was superb as he threw four touchdowns passes to WR Moses De Leon for a 61-yard score, WR Jayreed Amaya for a 57-yard touchdown, WR Gabriel Avila for 36-yard touchdown catch, and Trevino ended his night with a 60-yard strike back to Amaya. Trevino also added two touchdown runs to give the Jackets their second win of the season. “Wow, 56 points, it’s been a long time coming for our offense and I’m really proud of team tonight. We challenged our players at halftime and it paid off,” says Cardenas.
Next week, Edcouch-Elsa (2-1) will travel to meet Donna (2-0) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Bennie La Prade Stadium while Brownsville Rivera (1-2) travels to meet Harlingen South at 7 p.m. on Friday.
