(Edinburg, Texas)-The Edinburg Economedes Jaguars could be much improved in 2023 as head coach Rene Salas rebounds from 1-9 season in his first career head coaching position. “We will be improving each week and we are building this program. Our players are beginning to believe,” says Salas. “Our offseason has seen an increase of more players.”
Salas brings a great attitude and his team has bought into his coaching skills, and why not? Salas played for the Edinburg North Cougars football team that went undefeated back in the 1990’s.
Last season, the Jaguars got off to rough start by losing to Donna North in their season opener 26-6 but the Jaguars would pick up its first win against Brownsville Lopez (38-35) the following week. Salas talked about changes coming and he was elated that night after their Lopez win. Eight games later, the Jags endured eight straight losses to finish 1-9 in 2022.
Twenty-nine lettermen return along with five starters on offense and defense and Salas likes his chances of picking up more wins this season. “We have two quarterbacks battling for the starting position,” says Salas. Those two QBs are junior Julian Eguia (203 passing yards) and sophomore Johan Nunez (5’4 140lbs). Eguia played in five games last season while Nunez saw limited action. The Jags offense sputtered for 1,632 total yards and were outscored 117-383. The Jaguars will open its season at Donna North on August 25th at 7:00 p.m. followed by another road game at Brownsville Lopez on September 1st. The Jags will play its first home game against Corpus Christi Carroll at Richard Flores Stadium on September 8th with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m. “Our football program has our team believing,” added Salas.
