(Edcouch, Texas)-Donna High School senior all-purpose player, Jake Garcia scored two touchdowns as the Redskins (4-0) defeated Edcouch-Elsa High School (2-2) in the High School Sports Magazine’s Featured Game of the Week on Friday night at Benny Layton Sr. Memorial Stadium 26-8. “I’m so proud of the way we played tonight,” said Donna HS head coach, Mike Gonzalez. “We still need to work on finishing the game and maintaining our composure.”
Leading 12-0 at the end of the first half, the Redskins started the second half with a 85-yard kickoff return by Bryan Juarez to make it 19-0 over the Yellowjackets. Donna RB Joel Ramirez would add another touchdown after a turnover by the Jackets to make it 26-0 with 5:34 left in the third quarter. Late in the fourth quarter, flags flew in from both sides of the field with both teams showing their frustrations but TASO officials immediately took charge to control the game.
The Redskins will now play host to the Brownsville Lopez Lobos (0-4) as both teams will kickoff District 16-5A Division I on Friday night at Bennie La Prade Stadium. The Yellowjackets will travel to play the Port Isabel Tarpons (3-1) in a non-district contest before traveling to the coastal bend to meet Flour Bluff (1-3) in the their District 16-5A Division I opener on October 7th.
Both teams played excellent defense as the Yellowjackets limited sophomore quarterback, Geoffrey LeFevre (6’4 200lbs) to 13 of 26 passes for 111 yards and the Redskins rushed 32 times for 161 yards for the night. “We just need to execute better,” said Edcouch-Elsa head football coach, Victor Cardenas. “I am not pleased with tonight’s loss. We need to play much better.” Defensively, the Yellowjackets did play much better despite their struggles on offense as they held the Redskins to 277 total yards.
