(Edinburg, Texas)-The Edinburg Vela Sabercats shocked High School Sports Magazine’s No.1 ranked team, PSJA on Thursday night 6-4 in District 31-6A. With the win, the Sabercats (16-8, 10-3) takes over sole possession of second place, two games behind the Bears (21-3, 11-1). For PSJA head coach Marco Guajardo, it was his first district loss of the season.
In more games, Sharyland Pioneer (21-5, 9-1) swept its two-game series with Sharyland High School 15-4, 6-4 to remain tied for first place with McAllen Nikki Rowe (17-5, 9-1) in District 31-5A. The Diamondbacks are now 6-1 without head coach Casey Smith, who is no longer with the team with Shawn Moes taking over coaching duties. Also moving into the playoff race are McAllen Memorial and McAllen, both tied for fourth place at 5-5. The Bulldogs (7-15-2) blanked PSJA Southwest 6-0 while the Mustangs (14-9) defeated Valley View 5-4. Under head coach Eliseo Pompa (37th season), the Bulldogs are 6-1 in their last seven games.
In District 32-6A, Los Fresnos (19-6) remains undefeated at 10-0 after defeating Harlingen 12-2 on Thursday night while the Weslaco Panthers (18-4, 8-2) swept Brownsville Hanna 13-5, 11-1 to remain in second place under head coach, Eddie Serna (25th season).
