(McAllen, Texas)-The McAllen Lady Bulldogs (27-9, 11-2) wasted no time putting up 17 points against McAllen Memorial (20-14, 8-5) in the third period and never looked back, winning 43-29 as they secured second place overall in District 31-5A. “This was a great way to finish our regular season with a win over Memorial,” said McAllen head coach Stephanie Cantu. The Lady Bulldogs will end their season against PSJA Southwest next Tuesday.
With the loss, the Lady Mustangs will enter the State 5A playoffs as the fourth place team and will play 32-5A Champions, Brownsville Veterans (26-7, 12-0) next weekend in the bi-district championships.
With 6:53 left in the half, the Lady Mustangs had their opportunities to tie the game on a foul but freshmen Madison Borjas missed her foul shot at the line and the game remained at 11-10 McAllen.
On the next drive, the Lady Mustangs took their first lead of the game to make it 12-11. Lady Mustang head coach Clarissa Arredondo got off the bench and watched her team take another lead 14-13. A missed shot by Memorial Sophia Alaniz-Choy turned the ball over back to McHi Celina Saenz for an inside layup to make it 15-14 Lady Bulldogs with 3:20 left in the half.
Still, the never-say-die Lady Mustangs answered back with a three-pointer by Memorial Karina Garza to tie the game at 17-17 all with 1:39 left. McHi responded with a shot to make it 19-17. The half ended with McHi leading 20-18.
At the start of the third period McHi, again jumped out to six point lead with 3:57 left to lead 26-20. Lola Mallard scored on a fast break layup to give the Lady Bulldogs their biggest lead at 28-20. The Lady Bulldogs increased its lead by 18 points at the end of the third. “I told our girls that we could break loose,” said Cantu. The Lady Mustangs were plagued by too many turnovers and missed shots throughout the night.
The Lady Bulldogs will meet Brownsville Pace (15-18, 6-6) in the first round of the 5A playoffs.
