UIL To Release New Realignments
Next Thursday, February 3rd…

(Harlingen, Texas)-Many coaches from South Texas will travel to the Harlingen Aquatics Center, next to Boggus Football stadium next Thursday, February 3rd to see what new districts their teams will compete in for the next two years. “It’s going to be interesting,” says Port Isabel ISD Athletic Director, Tony Villarreal. “We played eight games on the road this season near the Coastal Bend areas. Hopefully, this will change.” The announcements will be made at 8:00 a.m.
The Port Isabel Tarpons, Raymondville Bearkats, and Grulla Gators could all be facing teams again, from the Coastal Bend areas unless, the University Interscholastic League creates a four-team district in 16-4A DII.
More possible changes might come with all three 5A McAllen ISD high schools (Memorial, McAllen, Rowe) moving West along with Rio Grande City, La Joya Palmview and Juarez-Lincoln. They could be paired in a new 5A district with three Laredo Schools, LBJ, Cigarroa, and Martin.
In more Class 5A changes, PSJA North will also move down from 6A along with Harlingen South and Donna North. All three teams could create another 5A district in South Texas. “We are moving down to 5A,” says PSJA North head football coach, Marcus Kaufmann. “It will be interesting to see what the UIL will do for the next two years.”
In Class 6A, the Rio Grande Valley will be left with 12 teams which could mean that with only five teams left from the Laredo area, all three Edinburg CISD teams (Economedes, Edinburg, North) could all be traveling West in 2022.
