(Harlingen, Texas)-The Harlingen Cardinals (8-3) held the Edinburg Bobcats (5-6) scoreless through four quarters as they won 21-0 in the Class 6A Division I Bi-District Championships on Saturday afternoon at Boggus Stadium. The Cardinals will travel to Joe R. Sanchez Stadium in Rio Grande City on Friday to meet 30-6A Laredo United South (8-3) in a rematch of their non-district game on August 27th. The Cards won that game 35-10. “All Glory to God,” said Manny Gomez, head coach of the Harlingen Cardinals. “Our hats off to Edinburg Bobcats head coach Rene Guzman and their team. They played a great game today.”
The Harlingen Cardinals drove inside the red-zone on their first possession and the Bobcats came up big with a turnover, an interception by Albert Armendariz in the endzone, igniting the Bobcats sidelines. The Cardinals would response with the same gesture by intercepting Roland Abrego, ending their scoring threat. Joseph Garza nailed a 35-yard field goal right before the half to put the Cardinals up 3-0.
Blue Grey All-American selection, Nathan Huerta kept Abrego off-balance along with his entire defense throughout the second half as the Cardinals built up its lead with a touchdown by senior quarterback Joe Lopez to give the Cardinals a 13-0 lead in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, the Cardinals scored again with Dominick Capetillo scoring to make it 19-0. The two-point conversion was good to make it 21-0. “We had our chances,” said Edinburg Bobcats head coach Rene Guzman. “I am so proud of the way our team played throughout this season and I wish our seniors best wishes in their careers.”
