(McAllen, Texas)-It’s the UIL Realignments coming February 1, 2024 in Texas where coaches from every sport will await their district changes based on student enrollments. Some teams will move up a classification, while other teams will move down, and in most cases, some teams will remain in their same enrollment classifications.

In the Rio Grande Valley and South Texas, coaches will meet at the Region One Center in Edinburg, Texas and at 9:00 a.m., the University Interscholastic League will reveal their district by district realignments for 2024-2026. “It’s exciting,” says Brownsville Veterans Memorial head football coach, JC Ramirez. “We will move up from Class 5A to 6A and most likely, we will be in District 32-6A for the next two years.”

The Brownsville Veterans Chargers made history in 2023 by advancing to the University Interscholastic League State 5A Division One Semifinals in football. The Chargers watched their season come to an end against Smithson Valley at Buccaneers Stadium in Corpus Christi, Texas. “It was a great season and moving up to Class 6A, well, our district is growing, so we will be ready for this season,” added Ramirez.

In Class 2A, the Santa Maria Cougars will be playing in District 16-2A Division One and head football coach Israel Gracia is a bit nervous when it comes to the UIL Realignments. “Trying to get a pre-district schedule is important, coming from a small school. Teams are limited when it comes to playing other schools,” says Gracia. “Still, it gives us opportunities. You just never know who’s coming in. It could for the better or for the worst,” laughs Gracia. HSSM Projections for District 16-2A Division I will feature Santa Maria, Freer, Three Rivers, Premont, and Rivera.

Still, there are some big concerns. In Class 4A DII, the Port Isabel Tarpons enters the realignments with an enrollment of 596 as compared to other 4A DII enrollments with up to 956 students. “It’s going to be tough with the realignments. At the end of the day, we have to line up and play football. A team with double the enrollments, you will have another 250 more athletes to choose from and worst, we would be at a disadvantage with less athletes and no depth,” says Port Isabel head football coach, Tony Villarreal. Still, should an eight team district occurs, travel concerns the Tarpon coach. “We spent an additional $200,000 on travel during the COVID year when we were paired with the Coastal Bend teams. This will be a concern for our district.”

Moving over to Class 6A, with only eleven 6A teams left in the Rio Grande Valley with enrollments over 2,275, a big change could take place and there are concerns with the traveling from one school to another on Football Friday Nights. “With all the rumors taking place right now with what the UIL will do when they announce the new realignments this Thursday, District 31-6A could be sending teams to the Laredo area. That would mean that all three Edinburg schools, including La Joya will be traveling West,” said Edinburg North head football coach, Damian Gonzalez. “Worst, our athletes will be coming late. especially during the weekdays, added Gonzalez. HSSM has predicted that all three Edinburg schools will welcome four Laredo schools along with La Joya to create a an eight team district.

In District 32-6A, the defending district football champions, Weslaco Panthers will see the addition of the Brownsville Veterans Memorial Chargers, last season’s Class 5A DI Semifinalists along with the 31-6A District Champions, PSJA Bears. “Should this happen, this would be a tough district. Heck, six out the seven teams all made the playoffs in 2023,” said PSJA head coach, Lupe Rodriguez. “It’s going to be fun. We wait wait till Thursday.”

The UIL Enrollment cutoffs determines which teams will play in each Classification starting with Class 1A to 6A. Here are the cutoffs for enrollments with each classification:
