(Brownsville, Texas)-The Brownsville Veterans Memorial Chargers are the District 16-5A Division I Champions! “We are champions,” shouted rookie head coach, JC Ramirez. “We all made this happen.” Those were the words of Ramirez as they defeated Brownsville Lopez (1-9) 71-21 on Thursday night at Chargers Stadium to win the outright district title. “I owe this victory to my past mentors who gave me a chance to coach in this business. From Valentin Montemayor, Marc Guess, David Cantu, and Kelley Lee, I thank you all,” added Ramirez.

The Chargers (8-2, 6-0) will play host to either McAllen Memorial or McAllen next Friday night at Sams Stadium at 7:30 p.m. in the Class 5A Division I playoffs. Both McAllen schools will face off tonight with the loser meeting Brownsville Veterans.

Last year in the playoffs, the Chargers defeated McAllen Rowe 45-3 in the first round followed by another win over Victoria West 21-15, before ending their season against PSJA North 35-15 in the UIL State 5A DI Regional finals.

Against Lopez, the Chargers took advantage of five turnovers and turned all into points, including a 85-yard kickoff return by Alvin Trevillion and a 60-yard run by Gilbert Trillo.
