(Port Isabel, Texas)-Make that two District 16-4A Division II titles in a row for the Port Isabel Tarpons (8-2, 3-0) as they defeated Grulla 28-7 on Friday night at Tarpon Stadium. Head football coach Tony Villarreal hoisted the trophy high and proud as he told his team, “We are district champions.”
The Gators (4-5, 1-2) finishes in third place overall and will meet 15-5A DII Sinton or CC Ingleside in the first round of the State 4A DII playoffs. “This is surreal. I think about our seniors and those players that have played in our program. This is a great moment for Port Isabel HS.” The Tarpons will play the loser of Robstown or Orange Grove from District 15-5A Division II in the 5A DII Bi-District Championships in two weeks.
