(Alice, Texas)-The Alice (5-1, 3-0) Coyotes pulled off one of the biggest upsets in 2023 by defeating the Calallen Wildcats (5-2, 3-1) 21-7 in District 16-4A Division I. With the win, the Coyotes will travel to play at Hidalgo (0-6, 0-3) next Friday night while the Wildcats will meet CC Tuloso-Midway (6-1, 2-1).
On Friday night, the Coyotes did the unthinkable by holding the power-running Wildcats to just 29-yards rushing and 112 total yards on offense under first-year head coach J.R. Castellanos. “All we wanted to do was fly to the football and be aggressive and we did that all night long,” said Castellanos. It was the Coyotes third win over Calallen in 29 games played.
The Wildcats defense did force two interceptions against the Coyotes but it was the sophomore quarterback Lucian Cruz making a difference as he rushed for more than 100 yards and scored all three Coyotes touchdowns. (HSSMImages/Special Pete Garcia)
