(Pharr, Texas)-The PSJA North Raiders (2-0) proved to be too much for Los Fresnos (1-1) as they defeated the Falcons 54-17 on Friday night at PSJA Stadium. The Raiders will now play host to Laredo United South next Friday night at 7:30 p.m. while the Falcons will meet PSJA (0-2) at home on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. For a moment, the Raiders led 14-7 after the first quarter and head coach Marcus Kaufmann, watched his team score 20 points in the second quarter to take a 34-7 lead at halftime. Down 14-0, Los Fresnos sophomore quarterback Robert Pineda found daylight on a 79-yard line for the score to make it 14-7. The Raiders held the Falcons to 185 total yards on offense to pick up their second win of the season.

Entering Week Three, the Raiders will face non-conference opponent Laredo United South Panthers (1-1), and then open District 15-5A Division I against the McAllen Bulldogs (2-0) followed by Edinburg Vela (2-0) in Edinburg on September 22nd. “Los Fresnos is pretty tough team. We came in real focused. I challenged our team. Looking ahead, United South is very good. They beat Flour Bluff,” says Kaufmann. “We need to make sure we enjoy this win and keep working.”

The Raiders defense has been the key this season. The have allowed 17 total points scored and have slowed less than 130 yards of total offense for their opponents. “It’s Black Shirt defense. Players like DB Leeroy Palacios had a pick against Los Fresnos, with DT Danny Garcia playing lights out. Other players like LB Michael Gonzales, have a difference. Our defense coordinator Brett Esparza has done a great job,” added Kaufmann. “By the way, it’s my birthday and I just turned 50.” Happy birthday coach. (HSSMImages/Ruiz)
