(McAllen, Texas)-The McAllen Memorial Mustangs (2-2, 0-1) led 27-17 in the fourth quarter over the Edinburg Vela Sabercats (4-0, 1-0), but that Sabercat Mystic came to play, shocking the Mustangs 31-27 in a come-from-behind win in their District 15-5A DI opener. The Mustangs will travel to play La Joya Palmview (2-2, 0-1) at PACK Stadium on Thursday night with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m. while the Sabercats will host 5A Division I State Ranked No.6 PSJA North (4-0, 1-0) on Friday night at Richard Flores Stadium in Edinburg.
From the start, the Mustangs shocked the Sabercats with a 73-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Kane Coy to WR Dylan Goodson to make it 6-0. Vela quickly responded with RB Jamal Polley scoring on a 17-yard run to make it 7-6. Coy wasn’t done. In the second quarter, trailing 7-6, the sophomore found an opening and took off on a 31-yard ramble into the endzone to take a 14-7 lead.
In the fourth quarter, again, Coy put his Mustangs up by finding Goodson for the score to make it 27-17. Vela fans were shocked! Sabercats head coach John Campbell did not flinch. Sabercats TE Noah Rocha recovered a Sabercat fumble and took it in for the score to put the Sabercats trailing 27-24. The Mustangs were forced to punt, and the Sabercats would score the winning touchdown with RB Bernabe Gonzalez busting loose on a 30-yard run.
