Celebrating the 30th Edition of High School Sports Magazine’s Football Preview SUPER TEAM selections, PSJA North High School QB Alejandro Aparicio (University of Texas-RGV Commit) leads the list of players on the first team followed by quarterbacks junior Donna HS QB 6’4 Geoffrey LeFevre (1,822 passing yards 20 TDs), senior Sharyland Pioneer QB Julian Valdez (3,220 career passing yards), PSJA QB senior Jaime Lopez (5,250 passing yards), and Weslaco QB Andres Sepulveda (1,856 passing yards). Lopez will be starting his fourth season as the Bears quarterback and head football coach, Lupe Rodriguez says that,” I’m going to let him (Jaime) loose this season.” Should that happen, Lopez could surpass former Sharyland Pioneer/UTSA QB Eddie Marburgers career passing record of 8,986 yards 103 TDs. Current Pioneer QB Valdez could also break another Marburger record, his overall career rushing (2,381 yards rushing). Valdez has a career rushing record of 1,281 yards. Aparicio is also closing in on Marburgers record as well, with 1,141 career yards rushing.
Top running backs returning with stats from 2022 is 6A All-State San Benito HS Fabian Garcia (2,230 yards rushing in 29 TDs), 5A All-State Roma HS Issac Lozano (2,012 yards rushing 20 TDs), Hidalgo HS Enrique Hernandez (1,105 yards rushing), Edinburg Vela HS Jamal Polley (1,580 yards), and Los Fresnos HS Gael Palestina (880 yards).
HSSM WRs selections are McAllen HS 6’1 Obed Alaniz (564 yards), Edinburg Vela 6’1 Jaxson Shupe (467 yards), PSJA North 6’0 Julius Arredondo (518 yards), PSJA 5’10 Caleb Salas (918 yards), Mission Veterans 6’0 Vince Abrego (moved to WR), Sharyland Pioneer 6’0 Leo Espinoza (1,140 yards), and Brownsville Veterans 6’0 Gerardo Gomez (783 yards).
