WESLACO-With sixteen teams trying to qualify for two spots at the Texas State 7-7 Championships at College Station, District 30-6A Laredo United South traveled two hours and half to Bobby Lackey Stadium in Weslaco with hopes of earning a spot after losing to Weslaco 13-6 last week in the qualifying round.
Today, the South Panthers sealed its ticket by defeating rivals, Laredo Alexander 33-13. In other pool play championship finals, San Benito lost its bid to state by falling to McAllen Nikki Rowe 25-6, as the Warriors punched its ticket to state too.
The Alexander Bulldogs had its opportunities trailing United South 13-6 with ten seconds left in the half at the two yard line. The Bulldogs just ran out of time. At the start of the second half, the Bulldogs ended its scoring drive with a pick six to put the South Panthers up 21-6.
Like the South Panthers, the Rowe Warriors lost to PSJA North, last week’s state qualifier, in the pool finals and they too, are headed to state after knocking off the Greyhounds this afternoon.
