(Austin, Texas)-The Rio Grande Valley athletes shined at the University Interscholastic League Track and Field Championships held at Mike Myers Stadium at the University of Texas-Austin. Despite the rain and thunderstorm delays, the Rio Grande Valley brought home 13 medals, including seven gold medals.
In Class 1A, Lasara High School Xiomara Rodriguez won the discus event with a throw of 136’11” to secure back-to-back titles and then she would pick up her silver medal in the shot put event. As a sophomore, Rodriguez won the gold in the shot put.
Moving over to Class 2A, La Villa High School sophomore Kaycei Salazar captured her Gold Medal in the 1600m run and won the Silver Medal in the grueling 3200m run.
The RGV was well-represented in Class 5A as Sharyland Pioneer’s Evan Thompson picked up his Gold Medal after winning the Shot put event with a toss of 60′-03.75 in the Class 5A Track and Field Championships. Serina Ramirez from Rio Grande City High School won the Gold Medal in the Shot put event. The TCU signee had a personal mark of 48’7.75″ to end her high school career. Sharyland’s Chukwubueze Ikondu picked up his Bronze medal in the Discus event. McAllen Memorial HS Auyden Granados picked up Silver Medals in the 1600m and 3200m runs as he will be headed to Oklahoma State in the Fall Semester. McAllen HS freshmen Yaneli Rocha finished 6th overall in the 800m while Carla Guerrero from Mission Veterans HS took ninth place overall.
In Class 6A, after a tree-hour race delay, Edinburg North’s San Juanita Leal won the 3200m race and she would again, win the Gold in the 1600m run. Teammate, Keyshawn Garcia picked up his Gold medal in the 800m run with time of 1:51.53 mark.
