(Edinburg, Texas)-The 31-5A Champions, Edinburg Vela Sabercats (25-13), led by Axel Garza’s 17 points to defeat the Brownsville pace Vikings 54-47 in the Class 5A Boys Bi-District Championships on Tuesday at Edinburg Vela High School. The win puts the Sabercats in the area playoffs against 29-5A Flour Bluff (25-10). “This is amazing,” said Garza. “We are playing the next round.”
In more 5A action, the 31-5A McAllen Bulldogs (19-17) upsets 32-5A Harlingen South 43-41 while 29-5A Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial slipped by 31-5A La Joya Palmview 76-75. Both winners will meet in the area playoffs this weekend. District 30-5A Champions, Laredo Nixon (24-11) defeated Victoria 55-37 to advance to the area playoffs and will play 31-5A runner-up, McAllen Memorial (27-6) in the area playoffs this weekend while Corpus Christi Miller (27-5) will play Weslaco East (25-13), winners over Sharyland Pioneer 41-27.
