(Brownsville, Texas)-The Brownsville Veterans Memorial (8-2, 5-1) Chargers clinched a share of the District 16-5A Division I title, in a 85-14 blowout over Brownsville Lopez HS (1-9) on Thursday night at Sams Stadium. With the win, the Chargers will play 15-5A DI third place team, McAllen Nikki Rowe, if McAllen loses to McAllen Memorial tonight.

The Chargers took a quick 15-0 lead in the first quarter and then QB Reese Sampayo connected with WR Gerardo Gomez on a 62-yard touchdown bomb to make it 22-0. Things just kept getting worst for the Lobos as WR Michael McHale took a pitch from Sampayo for a 42-yard sideline touchdown run to make it 29-0. Sampayo would connect again with McHale, this time on a 22-yard touchdown pass to make it 50-7 before the half. Still, the Chargers were not done. Running back Bryan Chavez broke loose on a 78-yard touchdown run to make it 57-0. He would end the night with six carries for 167 yards.

The Chargers finished the evening with 650 total yards on offense, including 508 yards rushing. Sampayo added five touchdown passes for the night. “This was a great win for our team. This team made a commitment this past summer and my staff has worked hard for this championship,” said head coach Kelley Lee.
