(Los Fresnos, Texas)-Whatever type of football magic Los Fresnos High School head football coach David Cantu is spreading on his Falcons, to date, they have magically, continued, to win football games in 2022. On Thursday night, the magic continued for the Falcons (5-1, 1-0) as they opened District 32-6A conference play with a 42-7 win over Brownsville Rivera High School (2-4, 0-1) at Sams Stadium in Brownsville, Texas. The Falcons will now travel to play the Weslaco Panthers next Friday night while the Raiders will travel to play the San Benito Greyhounds (5-0). “It feels good to be 1-0 and we were able to win another game tonight,” says Los Fresnos head football coach, David Cantu. Last season, the Falcons advanced to the University Interscholastic League State 6A Region IV Area playoffs before losing to San Antonio Brennan 63-10 in Cantu’s first season as head coach.

The Falcons passed for 199-yards and rushed for another 175-yards, led by freshmen quarterback 5’9 Robert Pineda. He now has 818.0 passing yards for the season, including 560-yards rushing on 79 carries. The Falcons scored 21 points in the first quarter and added another 21 points in the second half. Big runs by running back Gael Palestina in the first quarter for 64-yards put the Falcons in scoring position as he was tackled down inside the red zone. In the second quarter, Pineda would connect with Palestina for a 21-yard pass. In the second quarter, Brownsville Rivera RB Humberto Vega broke loose on a 42-yard run and then punched it in standing to make it 21-7 at the half. Still in the second half, Pineda rolled out and crossed-arm his pass and found Raiders DB Alek Guzman for an interception. “We need to play better. I was concerned with the Raiders in the first half,” added Cantu.

After the game, an exhausted Brownsville Rivera Raiders head coach, Beto Leal said, “We got a little beat up tonight.”
