(Edinburg, Texas)-On Thursday night, the 31-6A Edinburg Bobcats (5-3, 3-0) took advantage of the La Joya Coyotes (0-8, 0-3) miscues in the third quarter as they rolled 45-21 to clinch their second straight Class 6A Playoff Berth under head coach Rene Guzman. “This is an awesome feeling,” says Guzman. “Now, it’s time to get ready for the Edinburg North Cougars next week.” The Cougars defeated PSJA 18-8 on Thursday night to set up a possible showdown for the outright district title.

Big plays came on defense from Bobcats LB Johnathon Maldonado, who returned a fumble down the sidelines for a 75-yard touchdown after a forced fumble by DT Chevy Garza. DB Woodrow Villarreal would take another fumble in for the score.

In the second half, the Bobcats took over with QB Ryen Abrego adding a 39-yard touchdown run to make it 27-14 with 9:26 left to play in the third quarter. Maldonado would then score on his big run after Coyote running back, Oscar Mendoza fumbled at the Bobcats 26-yard line to up the lead to 35-14. Head coach Reuben Farias could not believe what was happening to his Coyotes. “It was a tough night but we have to get ready for our last two games to make the playoffs,” said Farias. The Coyotes needs wins over Mission and La Joya Juarez-Lincoln to clinch the fourth place berth.
