(Raymondville, Texas)-“All Glory to GOD! We are 1-0 and that’s all that matters,” said Raymondville HS head football coach, Frank Cantu. ”You all (HSSM) picked the perfect Blue Diamond Realty Group Game of the Week.”

With less than 1:24 seconds left to play, trailing Port Isabel 17-13, facing fourth down, Raymondville HS WR 6’0 Adrian Guajardo (Blue Grey All-American Bowl selection) waived at QB Diego Gutierrez and made the catch at the Port Isabel Tarpons 16-yard line. A few plays later, the Bearkats punched it in on a pass to Bryen Robles from Gutierrez for the 20-17 come-from-behind win in the District 16-4A DII opener.

Both teams exchanged early blows in the first half with the Bearkats stopping the Port Isabel Tarpons at the one-yard line on fourth down with LB Hunter Posas leading his Bearkat defense. “That play was crucial,” said Posas. He was right too. It cost the Tarpons the much need points at the end. ”We had our chances and did not convert those opportunities into points,” said Tarpon head coach, Tony Villarreal. The Tarpons forced the Bearkats to three first half turnovers, in total of four for the night.

The Raymondville Bearkats (3-4, 1-0) will play host to Rio Grande City-Grulla at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Burnett Stadium in Raymondville. The Tarpons (6-2, 0-1) will meet Bishop at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Tarpon Stadium.
