(La Joya, Texas)-Just before dawn, the La Joya Palmview Lobos football team kicked off its season like many high school football teams from across Texas. ”It’s always great to wake up early in the morning to practice football,” says head coach, Magarito Requenez. ”It’s a standard for our Lobos. It’s rise and shine.”
The Lobos will be playing in their newly realigned District 15-5A Division I with Edinburg Vela, PSJA North, McAllen Memorial, McAllen, McAllen Rowe, La Joya Juarez-Lincoln, and Rio Grande City. ”Its a tough district,” adds Requenez. ”Those teams that show up on Friday nights will be the ones that will be successful.”
On Monday, all Class 1A through 4A football teams opened with practices while some 5A and 6A teams, who did not participate with Spring Football also kicked off their season. These teams will practice this week with just helmets and shorts. On Saturday, these teams will be in full pads with scrimmages set for next Friday. The remaining 5A and 6A football teams who participated in Spring football will begin next Monday with their practices.
The University Interscholastic League has designated Week One to begin on August 25th. The Lobos will be on the road on August 26th to play a non-district contest against PSJA Southwest.
