(Hidalgo, Texas)-Robstown High School defeated 32-4A Champions, Hidalgo 5-1, 7-2 in the Best-of-Three series in the Class 4A Bi-District Championships to advance to the UIL State 3A Area playoffs against Pleasanton. On a blistering-hot Saturday afternoon, the Pirates fell behind early behind freshmen pitcher Larry Guzman, who gave up six runs on 12 hits through six innings. He was replaced by senior pitcher Steven Martinez midway through the sixth inning. The 31-4A fourth place team, Cottonpickers from District 31-4A scored five runs in the first three innings as junior pitcher Esai Gonzalez (6’1) struck out 12 Pirates and finished the game with 102 pitches. “That’s a tough district,” said Karlos Carrasco, Pirate head coach. “We have ten freshmen players on our roster and I’m looking forward to next season.” But, for senior Martinez, he will miss this team. “That’s baseball,” said a teary-eye, Martinez. “I’m going to miss playing this game. I’m going to miss being a Pirate.” (HSSMImages)
