(Edinburg, Texas)-At the H.E.B Park in Edinburg, the Progreso Red Ants are headed back to the UIL State 4A Region IV Boys Soccer Semifinals after knocking off IDEA Frontier 1-0 this afternoon. ”It’s been a while since we have been back,” says first-year head coach Gerardo Alanis.
The Red Ants made it to the playoffs in 2020 with four straight 4A Region IV Tournament appearances, including three straight state tournament bids, and then the University Interscholastic League cancelled the soccer playoffs due to COVID-19 pandemic. The next school year, Progreso ISD opted to cancel all sports due to the outbreak. ”This is our first season back after not playing,” added Alanis. ”I’m proud of this team.”
The Red Ants will meet Boerne, the defend 4A champions next Friday at McAllen Veterans Memorial stadium at 4:00 p.m. in the semifinals.
