(Edinburg, Texas)-At the H.E.B. Park, the Hidalgo Lady Pirates knocked off previously undefeated IDEA North Mission (17-1) on Tuesday night in overtime in the Class 4A Region IV Area playoffs 3-2. The Lady Pirates will now play in the 4A Region IV Quarterfinals against 29-4A Calallen.
The winds were blowing but this didn’t slow down IDEA North Mission. With less than :30 seconds left to play in regulation, the Lady Warriors, Melany Rubio punched it in to send the crowd cheering as they tied Hidalgo 2-2. That score could have been 3-2 for the Lady Warriors had they not been charged for offsides after they took a 1-0 lead with only 4:54 into the first half. Hidalgo’s Jayline Garcia gave the Lady Pirates the win after scoring in overtime. ”I’m really proud of our team,” said Hidalgo head coach Frank Alday. The Lady Pirates led 2-0 at one point in the game on goals by Garcia.
Also making moves, the 31-5A McAllen Memorial Lady Mustangs proved to be too much for Flour Bluff, winning 4-1. The Lady Mustangs will now play Gregory-Portland in the 5A Regional Quarterfinals.
In Class 6A,31-6A Edinburg Vela (19-4) swept past 30-6A Del Rio, scoring two goals in the second half to win 2-1. District 29-6A San Antonio Brennan (21-2-2) eliminated 32-6A Los Fresnos 4-2, while 31-6A La Joya Juarez Lincoln lost to 29-6A SA Taft (16-4-4) 1-0. District 32-6A Harlingen watched its season come to an end with a 5-1 loss to 29-6A San Antonio O’Connor (21-2-2).
