(Harlingen, Texas)-After two missed seasons due to COVID19, the Rio Grande Valley Coaches Association’s Meet of Champions got its start on Saturday at Boggus Stadium in Harlingen. ”It’s good to be back,” said Port Isabel ISD Athletic Director, Tony Villarreal.
All field events started at 12:00 noon with Daniel Rodriguez from Edinburg North HS winning the discus event with a throw of 161’08” feet while last season’s University Interscholastic League Class 4A Bronze Medalists in the high jump, Madison Ramos from Port Isabel HS crossed the bar at 5’4” for the win. ”I’m excited about this season and hopefully, I will get back to state,” said Ramos. In the boys high jump, Orlando Martinez from Edinburg Economedes HS had his personal best of 6’4” to win. ”This is awesome,” said Martinez.
The running events featured top runners from the Rio Grande Valley, including long distant runner, Ayden Granados from McAllen Memorial HS winning the 1600m and 3200m runs. In more running events, Harlingen HS Jose Landeverda won the 100m with a time of 11.00 seconds flat while Harlingen A, (Kian Torres, Rene Renteria, Luis Galvan, Alberto Garcia) crossed the finish line in the 4×100 sprint relay with a time of 43.75.
The 300m hurdles was easily won by Lisandro Lopez from Sharyland while Victor Salinas from Edinburg Economedes captured first place in the 110m hurdles with Lopez finishing second.
The 4x400m sprint relays was won by McAllen High School Team A, (Abbigail Villafranca, Sabrina Garza, Katelyn Vaden, Aleah Saenz), with a time of 4:03.62 and the Lady Bulldogs would capture gold in the 4×100 McAllen High A, (Abbigail Villafranca, Natalie Garcia, Miranda Quintanilla, Leslie Sequera) with a time of 50.55.
