(Brownsville, Texas)-For Brownsville Rivera head coach, Sal Garcia, he felt that it was time to win another state title, after all, the Raiders have gone dry since winning the University Interscholastic League State title in 2015. On Friday night, the Raiders shutout Edinburg North High School 3-0 in the Bi-District Championships, to begin their quest for another state title. The Cougars knew that earlier on, they would have to take advantage of any given opportunity. “We know that they are good team and we just have to be patient and look for opportunities,” said head coach, Elisa Moran of Edinburg North HS. Those opportunities never showed up on Friday night as the Raider’s Ryan Mancias scored his first goal at the 38:17 mark in the first half to give Rivera a quick 1-0 lead. In the second half, Rivera’s Marco Diaz put the Raiders up 2-0 with 26:09 left to play and Carlos Longoria would end the night with another goal to give Rivera a 3-0 win over the Bobcats. “Our defense played great tonight,” said Garcia. “Edinburg North put a lot of pressure on us but we never gave up.” With the win, the 32-6A Raiders (18-4) will play District 29-6A champions, SA Harlan (21-2) in the area playoffs next week.
