(Harlingen, Texas)-On Tuesday night, the Harlingen Lady Cardinals (25-9) eliminated La Joya 58-31 (17-15) in the University Interscholastic League 6A Bi-District Championships. With the win, the Lady Cardinals will await the winner between 29-6A runner-up, San Antonio Stevens (20-8) or third place 30-6A Laredo Alexander (17-12). Harlingen High coach Ashley Moncivaiz said, “I like the we played tonight. We need to get ready for our next round.” Lady Cards junior forward Juli Bryant scored six of her 13 points during the first quarter to give Harlingen and early lead. Harlingen High closed out the half with a 31-8 lead. For head coach Moncivaiz, she would love to get to back to the fourth round in 2022 and another rematch with Judson will not happen as the Lady Rockets lost to SA Brandeis 64-47 in the lower brackets of Class 6A. In 2021, the Lady Cardinals advanced to the UIL State Regional Semifinals with playoff wins over Edinburg Vela, SA Harlan, Edinburg, before falling Converse Judson 61-38. Senior Avery Hinojosa led the Lady Cards in scoring with 20 points. Emery Scoggins added 12, and Rosa Zapata scored 11 points for the night. (HSSMImages/Ruiz)
