(Edinburg, Texas)-On Monday night, it was all about the 31-6A champions, Edinburg Vela Sabercats (30-7) as they regrouped and knocked off District 32-6A fourth place team, Brownsville Hanna 66-52 in the University Interscholastic League 6A Bi-District Boys Basketball Championships from Region IV. The Sabercats will now play 29-6A San Antonio O’Connor (22-12) or 30-6A Laredo United (15-12) in the area playoffs this weekend. The Sabercats found themselves down by four points going into the second period and then SaberCats senior guard Alec Mancillas went wild. The 6’2″ senior scored 14 straight points in the second period and finished the night with 21 points, including five three-pointers. Vela center, Roland Rodriguez finished the night with 12 points and six rebounds.

The Sabercats will now await the winner of the SA O’Connor or Laredo United Longhorns. As for the Sabercats, thirty wins in one season is considered a great accomplishment, especially with non-district wins over Laredo United 71-67 back on November 16th but, should this rematch occur, the Longhorns could pose a threat to the Sabercats as they came back and defeated the Sabercats on December 4th 61-54.

The Sabercats are led by seniors 6’1 Tony Requena (12.0 pgg), Aidan Avelar (12.0 ppg), 6’2 ” Roland Rodriguez (5’0 rebounds per game), and Mancillas (11.0 points).
