(Edinburg, Texas)-It was a showdown in 31-6A. Both Edinburg (29-8, 14-2) and PSJA (27-10, 12-4) needed wins tonight. A win meant a second place seeding for the Lady Bobcats, a loss would mean a tie for second place with the Lady Bears. Edinburg HS head coach JD Salinas wanted the win. “It’s all about the playoffs and seedings. We need this win tonight,” said Edinburg HS head coach, Salinas. “We have three sophomores starting tonight with some freshmen. We are a young team and winning 28-games has been an accomplishment.”
The Lady Bobcats nailed thirteen three-pointers for the night with Edinburg High School sophomore Kimora Fagan getting things started with a shot from downtown. She would end the night with four swooshes from the arch. The PSJA Lady Bears had a tough time under the basketball missing early shots which resulted in turnovers, early on. PSJA’s Jordan De La Cerda lost the ball but she would redeem herself with a pass to high scorer, Kaylah Hernandez (29 points). She was a force throughout the evening with her hard-fought, under-the-basket rebounds. Hernandez tied the game at 5-5 all with 4:00 minutes left in the first period. The duo of sophomores Fagan (18 points) and Emily Carranco (23 points) put the Lady Bobcats with a pair of three-pointers and jump shots to make it 16-8 at the end of first period. In the second period, Fagan nailed her fourth three-pointer and Carranco added another to increase the Lady Bobcats lead to 22-10. Carranco added another three-pointer to make it 25-12. She ended the half with a three-pointer on a fast break to give the Lady Bobcats a comfortable 36-20 lead. “I’m proud of our team and winning 29-games this season was an accomplishment,” added Salinas.
At the start of the second half, Carranco was on fire as she scored back-to-back to make it 41-25; Lady Bobcats Madison Martinez also got into the mix of three-pointers as she hit several three’s to make it 49-34 at the end of the third period. The Lady Bobcats exploded down the stretch, to take a 57-37 lead, their biggest lead of the night with 5:46 left to play. Salinas pulled Fagan, to call it a night. “She played an outstanding game for us tonight,” added Salinas. Still, Lady Bobcats we’re not done draining threes, Carranco nailed another to make it 60-37. PSJA center Hernandez showed her frustrations, by sending her goggles flying into the bleachers with her family catching them.
In the end, the Lady Bobcats indeed notched the much needed win and a second place seeding in the University Interscholastic League’s State 6A Basketball playoffs with their 67-47 win over PSJA High School. The Lady Bobcats will play Harlingen South in the first round of the playoffs while the Lady Bears will meet Weslaco or Harlingen.
