(Harlingen, Texas)-After two COVID19 delayed seasons, the Rio Grande Valley Coaches Association kicked off its annual East vs West All-Star football game on Saturday night at Boggus Stadium with plenty of excitement as the East All-Stars won 21-17 on a 94-yard fumble return by Harlingen Christian Luna. East head coach, Harlingen South Israel Gonzalez watched his defensive team come up with big plays on Saturday night.
West coach Patrick Shelby from McAllen High School thanked Harlingen CISD for their stadium use and all proceeds from the game went to the RGVCA scholarship fund. “All proceeds from this game goes to our RGVCA Scholarship Fund,” said Shelby, RGVCA director.
After a scoreless first half, the West scored on a field goal after Edinburg QB Rolando Abrego led the charge down field to take a 3-0 lead. The East responded with a 22-yard touchdown run by Harlingen South WR Jeremiah Rivera to make it 7-3.
The big play. Harlingen South’s Levi Ince forced a fumble on the West’s 4-yard-line. East QB Mercedes quarterback Michael Cisneros, responded with a 2-yard TD pass to San Benito’s Jermaine Corbin to make it 14-3 East in the fourth quarter.
Late in the fourth quarter, West’s Dylan Velasquez from Mission Veterans made a great catch to put his team closer, trailing 21-10. The West got on the scoreboard again after WR Marcos De La Cruz from McAllen Memorial broke lose on a 45-yard catch to make it 21-17.
