(Corpus Christi, Texas)-The last time 31-6A Edinburg Vela (12-0) and 25-6A Vandegrift (11-1) met in the third round, the Vipers won 49-39. Both teams will meet again in the University Interscholastic League Class 6A Division II Regional finals on Friday at Cabaniss Field in Corpus Christi with a 4:00 p.m. kickoff. The winner will play PSJA North (10-2) or Austin Westlake (12-0) in the UIL State 6A DII Quarterfinals.
The Sabercats are a well-balanced team behind senior quarterback 6’2 Chase Campbell (1,664 yards passing 23 TDs) with running backs, Blue-Grey All American selection, PJ Rivera (801 yards rushing 503 yards receiving) and WR Justin Vega (531 yards).
Fifth-year head coach John Campbell is no stranger to the state playoffs. In five seasons, Campbell has led his teams to the playoffs with three third round appearances. “I’m proud of our team and coaches. We work hard and that’s what I’m so proud of with these Sabercats,” says Campbell.
On Friday, the Sabercats will meet a similar team with stats similarities. The Vipers will feature 6’2 Brayden Buchanan (2,627 passing yards 37 TDs), RB 6’0 195lbs Ryan Sheppard (1,162 yards 17Tds), and WR 6’2 Graylon Spring (686 yards).
