(Mercedes, Texas)-From the get go, Mercedes High School head football coach Roger Adame had only one thing in mind in 2021, win the district title. “We talked about these preseason goals and now, its a reality,” said Adame. “This has been a great season.” On Friday night, the Tigers defeated the 2020 UIL 5A DII Quarterfinalists, Sharyland Pioneer (5-5) in a 49-14 win. The Pioneer Diamondbacks were eliminated from the state playoffs.
The Mercedes Tigers (9-1) shares the District 16-5A Division II title with Mission Veterans and Sharyland as they will meet 15-5A DII runner-ups, Boerne Champion (8-2) in the first round of the University Interscholastic League 5A Division II Bi-District Championships on Friday at 7:00 p.m. in Boerne, Texas.
Mercedes HS senior quarterback, Michael Cisneros passed for 255 yards and two touchdowns to end the regular season with 2,374 passing yards and 30 TDs with only 4 interceptions. Throughout his varsity career, Cisneros has led his Tigers to three straight playoff seasons and has passed for 5,681 yards and 56 touchdowns. He has rushed for 1,702 yards and 17 TDs.
The Tigers will meet the Chargers, who average 34.0 points a game and have held their opponents to 19.0 ppg while the Tigers average 44 ppg and defensively, have held their opponents to 12.0 ppg. “It’s going to be a challenge. They are a good ball club,” says Adame. The winner will meet 14-5A DII Liberty Hill (2020 State 5A DII Semifinalists) or 13-5A DII Bastrop in the area playoffs.
