(Mission, Texas)-The road to the University Interscholastic League’s State Football Championships begins tonight when the defending 5A DII Regional Champions, 4th place 16-5A DII Sharyland Pioneer Diamondbacks (5-3, 4-2) plays host to first place, Mission Veterans Memorial (5-3, 5-1). The Diamondbacks will finish their regular schedule next week with Mercedes (8-1, 6-1). Pioneer needs to win tonight, it’s that simple. A loss will eliminate them from the playoffs. First-year head football coach, Eddie Galindo remains optimistic about their playoff chances. “We have to win tonight and then play host to Mercedes,” says Galindo.
In District 16-5A DII, Mercedes, Sharyland, Mission Veterans, are the frontrunners all tied with one loss in district play while Pioneer is one game behind with two losses, and Edcouch-Elsa HS is looking to clinch the final playoff spot should Pioneer lose to Veterans tonight at Richard Thompson Stadium. The Yellowjackets would need to beat Roma on Friday night to clinch a final possible playoff spot.

The Edinburg Vela Sabercats, PSJA North Raiders, Mission have clinched playoff berths while Edinburg (4-5, 4-3), PSJA (4-4, 3-3), and Edinburg North (3-5, 2-4) are all in the hunt for the final playoff spots. The frontrunners are Edinburg with Edinburg North and PSJA needing help. The Mission Eagles are 7-2, 6-1, are playoff bound too, with two games left to play against Edinburg Vela and PSJA North.
